It is time to get your vehicle ready for busy summer travel season.
The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence, which certifies and tests automotive service professionals, reminds vehicle owners that communication between the shop and the customer is key to providing satisfactory auto service. To make sure that the repair process goes smoothly, here’s a checklist:
* Follow the manufacturer’s recommended service schedules.
* Keep a log of all repairs and service.
* Inspect your car periodically for unusual sounds, odors, drips, leaks, warning lights and gauge readings.
* Be aware of changes in acceleration, engine performance, gas mileage, fluid levels and problems in handling, braking, steering and vibrations.
* When you take your vehicle in, be prepared to describe any problems. It is important to record when the problem started and whether it is ongoing or recurring. It can occur at any speed, under acceleration or during braking.
* Carry a written list of the symptoms that you can give to the technician or service consultant.
* Do not suggest a specific course of repair; let the technician diagnose and recommend a remedy.
* Ask questions. Ask for simple definitions.
* Don’t rush the service writer or technician to make an on-the-spot diagnosis. Before work commences, ask to be called so that you are informed of the problem, possible course of action, and any costs.
* Before you leave, be sure you understand all shop policies regarding estimates, guarantees and acceptable methods of payment.
ASE was founded in 1972 and is an independent organization that aims to improve the quality of automobile service and repair by certifying and testing automotive technicians. ASE-certified technicians are issued credentials that list their specific areas of certification. They wear blue and white shoulder badges and have a certificate stating this. They often have the blue-and-white ASE sign displayed at work.
