()Parents can find it difficult to teach teens how to drive. Driver’s education classes are great for focusing kids’ attention on driving rules and basic etiquette, but they must put that knowledge into practice on the road.

This is what you need to know: Michelin North America recently surveyed U.S. teenagers in seven major U.S. locations and found that 42% of them drive with unsafe tire tread while 40% have improper tire pressure. A third of teens (43%) have never checked the tire tread depth and a third (32%) have never checked the tire pressure. However, most teens agree that they should inspect their tire pressure and tread more often.

“The fact that car crashes remain the No. 1 killer of our teens is a national tragedy,”Scott Clark, president and chairman of Michelin North America.

“Many teens say they know the simple steps that make their tires safe, but too few are actually using their knowledge. It’s time to move our teen drivers from awareness to lifesaving action.”

Michelin and the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile have partnered to expand their Beyond the Driving Test program by adding the #StreetTreadContest. This is to further educate young drivers on tire safety and encourage them check their tires. The contest’s core is a collaboration between Michelin and Vans, a youth culture brand. Vans Classic SK8 Hi and Old Skool were limited edition versions of Michelin’s Vans Classic SK8.Hi shoes.

Teens can win one of the limited-edition Vans inspired by Michelin. They must share a photo proving their street tread.

“Any time I have the opportunity to encourage youth to develop their knowledge and improve their safety, I want to get involved,”Steve Van Doren, the son of Vans’ cofounders and vice president for events and promotions, said it.

“Using the iconic Michelin Man on our classic styles that are built on top of rubber will be a fun way to inspire tire safety and drive teens to take action.”
