Winter is gone and many people are excited for warmer, more sunny days. But, be careful if your vehicle is near trains or tracks.
Operation Lifesaver has some great tips to help you stay safe this spring.
Slow down. If you see an advanced warning sign, slow down and listen for a train.
-Keep your eyes on the road. Keep your eyes on where you are going. This means putting down your phone and removing your earphones. Turn down your music and refrain from texting.
-; Watch out for the train. To see the mirrors, windshields, and foliage that has grown since your last trip, move your head. You can also open the window to improve your hearing.
-; Stay at least 15 feet away from the crossing. You should keep your distance from any train you spot or hear, no matter if you are walking or driving.
-; Follow the instructions at the railroad crossing. If signals seem to be out of order, locate the 800-number on the railroad near the crossing. Do not cross the railroad until you’ve seen the gates rise or checked for a second train.
-; If you get stuck, get out! If your vehicle is stuck on the track, get out quickly and move off the tracks. Inform law enforcement officials and the railroad of the exact location of your vehicle.
