It’s now that winter is quickly approaching so it’s time for you to get ready for the weather. Don’t forget your car on your winter to-do list. Not only is it important for your safety but for peace of mind when you are driving in cold conditions.

The group that certifies and tests automotive technicians is the non-profit National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence. They offer tips for preparing your car for winter.

* Read the owner’s manual. These manuals provide recommendations for service that are specific to your vehicle.

* Correct any engine problems you’ve noticed. In cold weather, problems such as hard starts, rough idle, stalling, and reduced power can turn into a major problem.

* Check your engine coolant. Check the coolant’s level, condition, and concentration. If necessary, replace it. Coolant should be replaced with a 50/50 mixture of water and coolant.

* Check your belts. Bring your car to a technician to inspect the condition of the drive belts, clamps, hoses and cables.

* Change your oil and oil filter as specified in your manual.

* Be sure your heater and defroster are in good working order both for your comfort and visibility.

* Check your battery. A professional can only detect weak batteries. However, any weekender can clean corrosion from cables and post connections and clean surfaces. Safety precautions include wearing eye protection and rubber gloves.

* Check for exhaust leaks. Look for tiny holes in the trunk or floorboards. These could lead to dangerous exhaust fumes.

* Check your tread. Winter elements can make worn tires ineffective. They can be replaced with snow tires or all season radials depending on your climate.

* Replace worn windshield wipers and keep plenty of washer fluid on hand.

* Put a bottle of fuel de-icer in your tank once a month to help keep moisture from freezing in the fuel line.
