()Even for the most experienced drivers, winter driving can be difficult. According to Michelin’s winter driving survey, a shocking three-fifths of winter drivers (61%) have lost control of the car in winter weather.
It’s no surprise then that 35% of respondents feel nervous on winter roads (77%), while 64% of drivers say they avoid winter driving when the forecast is for snow.
You don’t need to be afraid of driving in winter. It doesn’t take much preparation to travel safely, even in less-than-ideal weather.
“Tires are one of the least-discussed safety devices on your vehicle, so many consumers aren’t aware of just how much they contribute to keeping you safe on the road,” says Ron Margadonna, Michelin winter tire expert.
Michelin advises all drivers that they use the appropriate tires for their local climate. Many cars come with all-season tires. However, they may not be enough for severe winter conditions such as heavy snow, ice and freezing temps.
All-season tires have been designed to be able to handle extreme winter conditions.
Winter tires like the Michelin X-Ice Xi3 can also be used. They are made to perform well in a variety of winter conditions such as snow, ice, and freezing temperatures. These tires improve vehicle grip and performance, and reduce braking distances to ensure safety.
These additional tips will help you to be safe while driving in winter.
• Inspect your lights: Examine your headlights and brake lights to ensure that they’re fully functioning. This is particularly important in winter fogs and heavy snow.
• Make sure your wipers are in proper working condition: Buy washer fluid with antifreeze solution to protect visibility and ensure that windshield blades are in good working order.
• Always have an Emergency Kit: Carry an emergency kit with gloves, blanket, flares, a shovel, flashlight, water, extra batteries and cell phone charger, as well as an emergency contact list with important phone numbers.
• Check your battery: Battery capacity is decreased significantly by cold weather. Check your battery before winter. This will ensure that it performs at its peak. Jumper cables are a great idea for anyone who might need to boost you.
