As gas prices rise, Americans are more likely to use public transport, carpool or consolidate their errands to cut down on their driving time. Insurance companies are taking notice.

GMAC Insurance will calculate the mileage of drivers who opt for this program. It is possible through their OnStar program (a communication technology that is available on GM vechicles). GMAC Insurance uses vehicle odometer readings for customers to determine their discounts. People who drive more than 15,000 miles per year are not subject to penalties by GMAC Insurance.

These tips are offered by the company to drivers who want to reduce their gas consumption.

1. Keep your vehicle in good condition. It will prevent future damage by following the maintenance schedule.

2. Make sure your engine is running smoothly and that your tires are properly inflated. Your vehicle will get more mileage if it runs smoothly.

3. Clear out your car. You can reduce your vehicle’s weight by getting rid of unnecessary clutter. Be sure to only take the essentials.

4. Use the gas pedal gently. You can improve your vehicle’s gas mileage by avoiding abrupt stops and quick starts.

5. Plan your trips. Consolidating errands into a single trip can help reduce the time you spend on the road and the gas consumption.
