Summertime brings with it longer days and perfect driving conditions for most of the United States. Michelin conducted a survey to find out if summer weather can create a false sense o security in drivers.
Nearly two-thirds of those surveyed (67%) reported feeling safer when driving in the summer. The top reasons for this were better weather (81%) and better road conditions (83)
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, however, car accidents are more common in the summer months than any other season.
According to the Michelin survey, 81 percent of drivers stated that they drive less cautiously during summer months and 72 percent said that they are less likely to pay more attention to their fellow drivers. During summer, drivers were almost three times more likely to check their tires.
“Drivers tend to think about their tires in the winter, when slippery, icy roads require maximum traction. But heat is the enemy of tires,”Michelin’s driving safety expert Sarah Robinson stated in a statement.
“Some of the most severe tire-related incidents are due to under-inflated tires in summer months.”
Michelin has several safety tips to help you drive safely this summer, in order to avoid potential dangers
– Give the car a tuneup. Check your car’s oil, fluids, windshield wipers and tires before you go on a summer road trip.
– Check your tires. To check your tire tread, use the penny test. You can also check the tire pressure by using the manufacturer’s setting located on the driver’s side door.
– Keep your eyes on the road. Do not use your phone, eat, or tend to pets or children in the backseat. When you feel tired, stop and take a rest. If possible, switch drivers.
– Watch your distance. Keep a safe distance between you and the road in an emergency.
Always keep an emergency kit with you. You should always keep an emergency kit in your car, including water, blankets and jumper cables.
