Whoever said: “It’s summertime, and the living is easy,”Hasn’t looked under an automobile’s hood. Auto systems are put under more stress by stop-and-go traffic and dusty roads.

“In today’s tough economy, motorists may be tempted to put off automotive maintenance, but neglect will cause your vehicle to wear out sooner, burn more gasoline and pollute more than a regularly serviced car,”Martin Lawson, the editorial director of National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence is an independent non-profit that aims to improve the quality of auto repair and service through the voluntary certification and testing of technicians. “What’s worse, a minor problem can become an expensive headache if neglected.”

The following tips are provided by ASE to help you select an auto repair shop.

Before you actually need one, start looking for repair facilities.

Arrange alternate transportation before you go so you are not forced to pick a shop based on its location.

Ensure that you find a clean, organized facility with cars in the lot equal to yours and modern equipment in all the service bays.

– You want a friendly staff with a service consultant or technician who is willing to answer any questions you may have.

You should look for policies that cover estimated repair costs, diagnostic fees and guarantees as well as acceptable payment methods.

Ask the repair shop if they specialize in your type of work.

– Pay attention to signs of professionalism, such as customer service awards, community or civic recognition, and other indicators that indicate professionalism.

– Make sure to look for proof of certified technicians. Trade school diplomas and certificates of advanced training work as well as certification by ASE are all signs of professionally trained technicians. ASE-certified technicians sport blue and white ASE shoulder badges, and are issued credentials listing their areas of certification.

– Look for the ASE symbol. Employers that employ ASE-certified technicians often have the blue and white ASE signs. Blue Seal of Excellence Recognition Program members may also include facilities with a high number of ASE-certified professionals.

Reward customers who provide excellent service by rewarding them with repeat business or customer loyalty
