The American diet of the past decade may have been best described by a single word: “abundance.”Modern grocery stores have virtually eliminated geographical and seasonal differences and offer a large variety of foods, meats, fruits, and fats. This should make meal planning easy.

But, America’s palette continues to change. Today’s consumer has more information than ever, and makes better-for-you decisions than they did when they started. “low-fat”And “organic”These products now offer gluten-free, non GMO and other options for healthier eating.

One area of the grocery shop is seeing a revival as fast food chains scramble to put nutritional information on their menus and snack food producers develop better options. frozen fruit juice concentrates.

First introduced in 1946, frozen juice concentrates became a hit by combining convenience and fresh-when-you-make-it taste in an affordable package that was easy to store. But sales started to decline in the last decade as consumers turned to bottled sports drinks and low-calorie alternatives.

Over the past 12 month, however, there have been a number of innovative products that have entered the frozen juice aisle. These new products have completely reshaped the traditional frozen beverage category. Frozen fruit and vegetable blends, “green” smoothies, blended coffees and frozen teas all break the norm of frozen juice yet offer the same fresh-when-you-make-it appeal. Although category sales are not yet at their peak, retailers have taken note.

“We’re really excited about the short- and long-term potential for the frozen juice category,”Kevin Miller, vice-president of marketing at Old Orchard Brands in Sparta (Michigan), the nation’s second largest producer of frozen juice concentrates, said this. “We’ve introduced more than a dozen new products in just the past year, and several of our key retail partners have allocated more space to get them in the store. We remain optimistic about the long-term viability of frozen juices.”

Miller refers to a line frozen fruit and vegetable concentrates that combine sweet potato, carrot and beets with blueberry, peach, mango and other juices to give each glass a full serving. The company also introduced a range of sweet tea blends and will launch a frozen coffee product this year.
