-Researchers at University of California, Irvine studied the effects of OraCoat XyliMelts dental adhering discs upon people with clinically diagnosed dry or sensitive mouths. The discs were found to reduce tooth plaque by 58 % and improve swallowing ability for people with dry mouth.

XyliMelts a dry mouth product with a patent is able to stick to gums without a molar. This releases one-half gram Xylitol that stimulates saliva and cellulose gum. Together, these two forms a lubricating cream.

The study examined the effects of XyliMelts upon saliva production, the ability to neutralize acid and patient comfort. Five subjects were given the treatment. They used two discs at night, one on each side, and the other as needed throughout the day. The subjects averaged four discs per day during the day.

The product was found to significantly reduce sleep disturbance by staying asleep for six hours, which is when dry mouth can be at its worst. It also improved the mouth’s wetness in morning. The product also reduced tooth sensitivity to spicy, hot, and cold foods and drinks. The test showed that subjects using XyliMelts together with standard dental care had higher saliva flow than those who use only standard oral care.

The ability of saliva to neutralize acids which cause tooth decay and double the saliva production in situ was shown to increase. The most important thing was that subjects who used XyliMelts with standard oral care had higher saliva flow than those who only used standard care.

A 21-day clinical trial evaluated the effects of XyliMelts in dry mouth patients. It also examined patient comfort and saliva production. The five subjects in the study were given XyliMelts according to the recommendation. Two discs were used while they slept, one on each side, and two more during the day. The subjects used on average four discs per day during the day.

Clinical trials proved that XyliMelts can effectively relieve dry mouth. Researchers found that XyliMelts reduced sleep disruption by being able to last for six hours, which is when dry mouth can be at its worst. They also increased the amount of wetness in the mouth upon waking up. XyliMelts decreased tooth sensitivity to spicy, hot, and cold foods and drinks. The adhering discs doubled saliva production, while they were in place, and increased saliva’s ability to neutralize acids that cause tooth damage. The most important thing was that the saliva flow of subjects who used XyliMelts with standard oral care was higher than those who only used standard oral care. XyliMelts can not only relieve dry mouth symptoms but they also stimulate saliva formation.

The majority of XyliMelts subjects gave positive feedback. They said they would continue to use the discs and recommend them to others. Subjects reported that XyliMelts were easy to use, with a pleasant taste and overall feel.
