While we may forget our New Year’s resolutions from time to time, this year we can resolve that we will take better care of our cars all year. Firestone Complete Auto Care has the following tips to help you get started with winter vehicle maintenance.

* Be proactive. Winter can only make existing problems worse, such as pings and hard starts, slow performance, or rough idle. Before the temperatures drop and the streets become icy, make sure that your vehicle is in top mechanical condition. You must ensure that your engine is in top condition. Make sure to check the cooling system. The maintenance schedule for your vehicle should specify when coolant needs to be replaced.

* Be on schedule. Keep your motor oil topped off regularly. The manufacturer will recommend that you use the correct weight and type of oil. Make sure that the heating/defrosting systems are working correctly.

* Be prepared. Your trunk can be used to store winter emergency supplies. You should have a spare tire that is properly inflated, windshield de-icer, ice scraper, flashlight, blanket, extra clothes and bottled water.

* Be on the defensive. You should be prepared for winter driving conditions and ensure that your tires are properly maintained. Tire pressure and tread should be checked every week once it turns cold. The tire’s PSI measurement may drop by 1 pound for every 10 degree drop in temperature. Consider winter tires if you live in an area where snow and ice can be a problem. These tires are specifically designed to grip slippery roads.

* Be diligent. Use common sense during adverse road conditions. In winter conditions, reduce your speed and increase your following distance. Don’t try to spin your tires when you get stuck in snow. It can heat them up and cause potential damage. For traction, use sand, gravel or kitty litter to aid your tires.
