– Other than in your bathroom, where have you flossed? If you’re like nearly 40 percent of Americans, the answer is… in a car.
You might try it on a date. Seven percent confessed to flossing while on a date. Another six percent admitted to flossing on a date.
Experts agree that flossing should be done at least once a day, however, the Atomik Research study for the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP), shows that only seven percent of Americans say flossing is the most important aspect of their oral care. This suggests that adults could benefit from better education about maintaining healthy gums and teeth.
“Healthy gums are the foundation of a great smile,”Steven R. Daniel, DDS president of the AAP and a practicing periodontist at Murfreesboro in Tenn. “Taking care of your gums means more than just flossing when there’s popcorn stuck in your teeth or when you’re killing time in traffic. It also requires integrating diligent at-home care into your personal care routine and regular visits to a periodontist to ensure your mouth is healthy and free of periodontal disease.”
How important is flossing in our personal care routines?
Of the respondents who reported flossing, 23 percent said it was their most important personal care ritual.
* Brushing their hair (48 percent)
* Applying moisturizer (38 percent)
* Shaving (32 percent)
* Cleaning their ears (25 percent)
