Justin Thorpe was just 16 years old when he crashed his car into an embankment. His life was changed instantly.
The car caught fire shortly after the accident. Thorpe sustained severe burns to over 40% of his body. Thorpe remained unconscious for over two months. He was then placed in a medically-induced coma at the hospital to receive treatment for his severe burns.
Thorpe discovered that the generous gift of human life provided by many tissue donors saved his life.
Thorpe was admitted to the University of Colorado Hospital and treated by Dr. Joshua Goldberg as well as Dr. Gordon Lindberg. To cover the wounds and promote healing, the doctors used allograft, which is skin donated by deceased human donors.
Even though skin substitutes or animal skin may be used to treat burns, the most effective treatment is still with human allograft skin.
“Human allograft skin works the best because it adheres better, it stimulates new blood vessel growth and is not as prone to infection,”Dr. Lindberg M.D., Ph.D. was the hospital’s director of its burn unit. “Once Justin had recovered from his injuries, we replaced the allograft with his own skin. However, the initial life-saving treatment with allograft wouldn’t be possible without the generosity of tissue donors.”
Even though the 7,000 square cms of allograft tissue used to treat and protect Thorpe’s burns lasted only for two weeks it was crucial protection during the initial stages of his treatment.
“In the U.S. someone is burned every 29 minutes. Stories like Justin’s are a lesson for everyone -; tissue donation can have the same life-saving impacts as organ donation,”Thomas A. Cycyota is president and CEO at AlloSource, which is one of the largest national providers of allografts skin that can be used by burn centers to treat severe burns patients.

Thorpe is now back in his teens, nine months after the accident. He bikes and plays video games. He is reminded of the accident through scarring, but also the second chance that he was granted by the generous donors he had never met.
Pregnancy can be very exciting. There is so much to do, so many appointments to keep. Many expecting mothers worry so much that their baby is not here yet, that they forget about taking care of themselves.
Experts agree that prenatal vitamins are crucial for both mother and baby.
“During pregnancy, a woman’s body undergoes many physical and hormonal changes. She can experience things like fatigue, loss of appetite and an upset stomach, which can make it difficult to maintain the proper levels of essential nutrients needed for a healthy pregnancy,”Jay M. Goldberg MD, FACOG, is an obstetrician based in Los Angeles.
Prenatal vitamins include DHA, an Omega-3 fat acid, and Folic acid. These vitamins not only help soon-to-be moms maintain a healthy lifestyle, but also can help the baby’s brain and eyes develop.
It is important to understand that not all vitamins work in the exact same way. There are alternatives. Vertical Pharmaceuticals LLC is responsible for the creation of the only prenatal vitamin with egg based DHA. OB Complete Gold. OB Complete Gold includes OmEGGa DHA. This DHA is bio-efficient and can be found in the brain, eyes, and other body parts. OmEGGa DHA has a simple absorption and is easily absorbed by the body.
