The nation’s largest celebration of educational opportunity will take place later this month. National School Choice Week will be held from January 26 to February 1, with 50,000 activities and events across the country. This week, awareness will be raised about K-12 education options.
What gives the Week its energy is the real impact of school selection. Learning environments can transform lives, sometimes in unexpected ways. Remember Dr. Seuss’s Dr. Seuss story where a character insists green eggs and bacon are not for him, even though he has actually tried it. As the President of National School Choice Week I am privileged to hear parents, students, and educators from all over the country share their experiences each month. “green eggs and ham”It takes moments.
Teacher who was ready to quit the teaching profession, but then she became skeptical about teaching in virtual schools. One mom who had never thought she would homeschool, until her son’s health issues made her realize how beneficial it was. A student who felt uncomfortable at his previous school and is now happy and successful in a traditional school.
That is the power and potential of school choice. Each child learns differently. Every family is different. Family members have the ability to make choices in order to find the right learning environment for them.
School choice recognizes that parents have the best chance to learn about their children’s interests in botany, reading, or drawing whimsical cartoons. These parents are also best equipped to select the learning environment for their children.
National School Choice Week recognizes traditional public, private charter, magnet and private education. We support and celebrate families regardless of the type of school they choose. Students succeed when families and schools come together.
Every child deserves to leave school each week feeling inspired and ready to help others. School Choice Week is a great way to show your love for your school! When you’re looking for a school to suit your child’s needs, it is worth trying something different. Sometimes, your child might be having a green-eggs and-ham moment. This is when their frustration with learning becomes an exuberant moment. “I do love it!”
