For older adults, home may not be the place where their heart is.
It can be difficult to balance the need to downsize and the recognition of it. However, people may not want to do so because of the memories attached to their home. After all, they may have lived there for many decades. Because of today’s stagnant housing market, this may be impossible.
You might be wondering what you should do. You might instead consider the following: stairliftMake your home more functional.
There are many reasons why a stairlift should be installed. The most common reason is for someone to become too weak to climb up or down the stairs due to age, illness, injury, etc.
Cornelius Rice (80) from Wilkins, Pennsylvania had to take a terrible fall to realize he needed help with his balance problems.
“[A stairlift] makes it convenient for me to get around, and makes it easy on the wife,”Rice spoke with the Pittsburgh-Post Gazette about his interview. “She doesn’t have to take me here or there now, or be lifting me.”
Like old chair lifts, the new models sold by Orlando-based Acorn Stairlifts run on two small 12-volt batteries or regular house current. When not in use, the chair and footrest can be folded up to allow for easy access to the stairs. All lifts have sensors at the foot platform. They will stop the lift if the sensor is activated by a pet, a child or a foot that has fallen off the platform.
Tim McCool is the VP of Marketing and Sales for Acorn. A built-in stairlift makes sense to the elderly, says McCool.
“When I first started with Acorn Stairlifts over 10 years ago as a sales rep, one of my first customer interactions was with a woman suffering from ALS,”McCool. “She had to be carried up the stairs just to use the restroom. I talked with her for over an hour, and it’s stuck with me all these years, and it’s why I’m so committed to what we do to improve people’s lives.”
Experts agree that the hardest part is getting older people to admit they need one. However, many people wish they had done it sooner. One consultant said that older people may not want to spend money on this kind because they would have to admit that they have a disability.
