Mike Flynt made the decision to play college football, despite the fact that most 60-year-olds carry cards and count down the days until they can spend time with their grandchildren or hit the links for 18-holes. He was 59.
His new book will help you understand the why and how. “The Senior,”This article details Flynt’s experience being the oldest contributor to a college football team in NCAA History. Flynt is determined to prove that there is life beyond football. However, Flynt also believes that you can always go back to your childhood and reach your goals.
Flynt was born in Odessa Texas. It is a small Texas town, but Flynt has a great love for football. Flynt, like many young boys, grew up playing the sport.
He was so successful that he was a member of the Odessa Permian state championship team in high school. This high school inspired the movie. “Friday Night Lights.”
Flynt continued to play linebacker at Sul Ross State University for three more years. Flynt was kicked from school during his senior year due to a fight. He had been eligible for one year. Flynt finished his credits elsewhere and finally received his degree at the college he had been asked to leave.
Deciding that his passion lay in training athletes like he was at one time, Flynt spent the next five years as a strength and conditioning coach at Nebraska, Oregon and Texas A&M.
In the early 1980’s, Flynt resigned from A&M in order to start training the next generation of athletes – children. His organization “Train Up A Child”This program was created to allow parents who home-school their children to safely strength train without the use of equipment while still achieving aerobic growth.
Fast forward to 1999 and there was a new epidemic – childhood obesity. Flynt was determined to make a change and used his talent and knowledge to create Powerbase Fitness, a portable device that uses resistance tubing.
Flynt has more than 40 years of experience in fitness training. He applied for and was granted his fourth year of NCAA eligibility, which allowed him to apply for the Sul Ross State football program. This brings Flynt full circle.
“I think it was Carl Yastrzemski who used to say, ‘How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you were?’ I’d be in my late 20s or early 30s, because that’s how I feel,”Flynt:
