From the perspective of history, the most famous accommodations in Valley Forge, Pa. and Montgomery County, Pa. are the tents or huts that housed Continental Army during the winter of 1777-1778.
The area has come a long distance since then.
The Woodside Lodge, Spring Mountain, Schwenksville (Pa.)’s backstory combines both family ties and history. The original inn was constructed in 1920s. Gayle and Rick Buckman, an enterprising couple with ties to the area, resurrected it. Rick’s dad was once a busboy at the inn. It reopened as a nine-room oasis in February 2012 after extensive renovations. While the original details were preserved, such as the lovely glass doorknobs, modern amenities abound.
The John Kindig House Bed & Breakfast, Hatfield, Pa., maintains its 1864 roots through the plaster-over-clapboard construction of the original farmhouse. The rooms are decorated inside with original artwork and reproduction furniture. Unique for this type of property, the B&B features an outdoor swimming pool.
The Morgan Hughes Homestead, Lansdale (Pa.) is the intersection of two famous American families: J.P. Morgan’s Morgans and the Hughes-Boone families (of Daniel Boone fame). Manor House rooms feature queen-sized beds, private baths, and cathedral ceilings. Original hardware is still intact on the smokehouse and walk in fireplaces. Many of these doors can be opened from the outside. “six-over-nine” windows contain original, handmade glass.
Wayne Bed & Breakfast Inn, Wayne, Pa., offers a different look and feel to the other area B&Bs: one of Victorian opulence, but not so formal that visitors can’t take a dip in the outdoor pool. Innkeepers Bob and Traudi Thomason, who were built in 1890, still retain a bit of their cultural heritage as they welcome guests with a warm, hearty welcome.(*) (“Hier, wird Deutsch gesprochen””Here, German was spoken”Information on all accommodations
