The majority of Americans believe that the continents were uninhabited before Europeans colonized them. There were 56 million people in America at the time Columbus arrived.

Within two generations, over 90 percent of the native population had been decimated by disease and war. The Native American population survived. “Indians”More than 200,000 impressive pyramid-shaped mounds and complex earthworks, including the largest in the world, were left behind. Today, less than 1,000 mound sites are left.

“America’s Mound Builders created massive earth formations and mounds, and Native American earthworks are actually the biggest and most complex in the world. It’s an archaeological treasure that goes largely unrecognized by the public. One mound complex in Illinois has a pyramid mound over 110 feet high, and its base is larger than the Great Pyramid in Egypt,”Dr. Greg Little is the author of “The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Native American Mounds & Earthworks.”

“There’s a mystery there,”The list goes on. “There is a massive stone chamber inside it that has never been excavated.”

Louisiana is home to the oldest mound, which dates back to 3700 B.C. However, there are many large shell mound complexes all along the Atlantic coast that are nearly as old.

“It’s highly likely that there are older mounds hidden in shallow water along the coast that were inundated at the end of the last Ice Age,”Little to no. “The Native Americans were building pyramid-shaped mounds more than a thousand years before the Egyptians were, and they can be found in nearly every state.”

There is little to suggest that families should take family vacations to the large archaeological parks and museums located at these important mound sites. Many of these museums and parks have no fees or a minimal charge.

“It’s a way to engage children in our lost or forgotten history and is a great way to teach children about indigenous cultures. Almost every state has a couple major sites,”Very little more.
