According to NWF Guide young children and teenagers are losing between 10-14 hours sleep each week. Sleep deprivation can hinder physical growth, affect school performance, cause anxiety and depression, and lead to obesity in the future. Children are often poor judges of how much sleep they need.
Three critical aspects of outdoor time can improve a child’s sleeping quality are highlighted below. Research shows that children can relax and feel calmer in natural settings. Exercise outside encourages creativity, and helps improve motor skills.

According to the NWF, parents should reduce children’s use of electronic entertainment while allowing them to have some outside play. Children should be disconnected from electronic devices at least one hour before bedtime to allow them to settle down and prepare for the arrival of the sandman.
