It is a spectacular display of natural beauty, which takes place every year to celebrate California’s paradise – the Pasadena Tournament of Roses.

Internationally televised New Year’s Day Rose Parade festivities features 40 magnificent floats decorated using thousands of roses, fruits, vegetables, and exotic flowers.

Jacob Maarse Florist, Pasadena (Calif.), is the preferred florist for the Pasadena Tournament of Roses. They provide many of the roses used on the Rose Parade floats. This event attracts more than 150 million viewers around the world. Jacob Maarse Florist, a florist, decided to search for the best water to grow roses.

The cut flowers were tested in three water types: tap water with floral preservatives, city tap water, and LifeSource water. Hank Maarse (president of Jacob Maarse Florist) answered questions about the test. “We’ve been testing the LifeSource water system in our Pasadena floral shop since March 2006, and we found that cut flowers keep their vibrant color better and last three to four days longer when kept in the fresh, filtered water.”

Phoenix Decorating Company, which has been a Rose Parade float builder since 1956, also has LifeSource water systems installed at float decorating facilities, flower-prep zones, and in flower tents. The water is filtered to preserve the freshness of the flowers used for decorating and the water in the vials on the floats. Chris Lofthouse is the president of Phoenix Decorating. “Their water makes flowers not only grow better, but also helps them last longer.”

What makes filtered water so important? The flowers are able to withstand the heat and sun better when they have water that is free from chlorine and chloramines. When water is treated with chlorine, flowers retain more moisture and are softened, right from the moment they are unveiled during the parade.
