Americans love U.S. Farm Raised Catfish. It is long considered a Southern staple.
Most catfish growers raise their fish on family-owned farms in Mississippi and Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Louisiana. Many families have been raising catfish for generations.
The catfish live in freshwater ponds, and are fed pellets containing corn- and soybean-based grains. The catfish are harvested when they reach market size and sent to most rural processing plants. This creates jobs and boosts local economies in the southern U.S.
“Our goal at The Catfish Institute is to educate consumers about what a wonderful, home-grown product we have in U.S. Farm-Raised Catfish,”Roger Barlow is the president of the organization. “When consumers purchase catfish labeled with the U.S. Farm-Raised Catfish seal, they are supporting an industry that provides jobs to thousands of Americans.”
Recent food crises have changed Americans’ perceptions of food. Consumers are becoming more concerned about food safety and are asking for products that are grown or raised in the United States.
America can increase its food security by switching to locally produced food. “It’s important to remind people how much the U.S. Farm-Raised Catfish industry matters -; both economically and as a stable, sustainable food source,”Barlow. “We need to remember to support our hardworking American farmers by purchasing products grown in the U.S.”
