It goes without saying that “Water, water everywhere, but not a drop to drink”This rings true. Water covers 70% of the Earth’s land surface. Yet, we make very little of its potential.
Although fresh water is used to irrigate fields, wash dishes, and prevent dehydration it only makes up 1% of the world’s water supply. Although moving water is an energy source, only 19% of world’s electricity comes from hydroelectricity.
Water is a natural and renewable resource. But humans don’t always use it in an environmentally-friendly manner. The National Research Council says that ocean-desalination plants do more harm than good by consuming so much energy.
Hydroelectric technologies today use dams in order to harness the energy of moving water. Large dams are costly and require energy to build. They also displace communities and disrupt wildlife habitats. There are 80,000 dams in the United States that divert or block water flow, disrupting wildlife and changing river habitats. A diversion dam was partly responsible for the 2008 collapse of the largest Chinook salmon run in Sacramento River.
Power of the Dream Ventures, Inc., a Hungarian technology company, is trying to change the way humans use water. The prototype for ocean desalination will be completed by Power of the Dream Ventures, Inc. and will use solar or winds power to produce drinking water at low monetary cost.
Power of the Dreams Ventures, Inc. has also created a model of a product called RiverPower, that can supply hydroelectric energy without the use of dams. RiverPower generators would be submerged in strategic spots to use the entire flow of a river for electricity generation. RiverPower could supply energy 24 hour a day, which makes it more reliable than either solar or wind energy.
RiverPower is available for further information. www.powerofthedream.com. Power of the Dream trades are made under the symbol PWRV at the OTCBB exchange.
