American consumers are committed to using environmentally friendly products, such as hybrid cars, energy-efficient appliances, and plastic grocery bags. New products introduced by top retailers in the country that are more environmentally friendly have increased the demand for green products.
EarthShell, a line of disposable dishware made from 100 percent biodegradable materials, has gained shelf space in more that 5,000 national stores, including Wal-Mart, Target, and other major regional grocers. EarthShell products are made from corn and potatoes as well as limestone. They can be filled in U.S. grocery shops rather than in landfills.
“Consumers are increasingly demanding products that offer convenience, quality and environmental responsibility,”Bob Pondo is vice president of Renewable Products Inc., which produces EarthShell.
It uses less energy to make; produces less carbon dioxide “greenhouse”Carbon dioxide “acid rain”sulfur dioxide and takes up less landfill space than plastic, paper and foam. Independent studies have shown that EarthShell biodegrades completely in compost, outdoors and marine environments. EarthShell reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 55% and requires 70% less landfill space than plastic, paper, and foam.
Non-biodegradable containers, packaging, and other products make up the majority of the solid waste stream. This is 76.7 million tonnes a year according to the Environmental Protection Agency. These products, which include disposable dinnerware, are made of plastic, foam, or paper.
Convenience-seeking diners no longer have to feel guilty about using disposable plates. They can still enjoy quick cleanup and affordable meals on the move.
