What would your plan be if you knew you only had one year to live? Blaize Nolynne, a published author, explores this question through the eyes of a volunteer firefighter in River Falls Maine. The novel is available here. The Captain’s Last Year, Fighting Fire and Cancer, One Year to LiveThis documentary depicts the realities of cancer and its effects on patients and their families.

Steven Williams is a fire captain who has been diagnosed with stage IV stomach cancer. His doctors gave him one year of life expectancy. Steven initially acts in denial. However, he then attempts to deal with the fact that his treatments are failing. He contemplates how to make the best of his year and deals with many issues. Can he improve his relationship with Christopher or the disrespectful attitudes that have become a problem in his neighborhood? Ms. Nolynne hopes to get readers to consider what they would do with one year of life.

Many of Ms. Nolyne’s books are about fire and rescue services. She writes from personal experience. She spoke out to The Independent about her father’s volunteer fire captain role with Standish’s fire department, Maine. She also mentioned that she used to visit the department as a child. Her paternal grandfather was both a volunteer firefighter, as well as a driver for the local rescue team. Her great-grandfather also served as a South Portland fireman.

A family member, Ms. Nolyne’s grandmother, also inspired the novel after her battle with terminal illness.

Ms. Nolynne will honor her grandmother and all firefighters in her family by helping to pay for the medical costs of Jeff Douglass (a Baldwin fire chief who has stage 4 pancreatic cancer).
