What happens when you combine a vehicle with a sense for adventure and some time away from your daily tasks? A road trip.
Many people enjoy a bit of relaxation and time on open roads when the weather is warmer.
As important as setting the itinerary and getting the snacks for your group, it is equally important that your vehicle is ready to go. Firestone Complete Auto Care has a number of tips that will help you get on the road safely.
* Before you set out, have an automotive technician make sure the vehicle is travel-ready by checking the battery, fluid levels, windshield wipers, lights and exhaust system.
* Carefully examine the tread on your tires monthly and before every long trip. At least 2/3 inch must be the tread depth on your tires. More is more.
The following tool will help you determine when your tires need to be replaced. “penny test.”Place a penny on several spots of the tire’s tread with Lincoln’s head facing down. If Lincoln’s top can be seen in any of the spots, then the tread needs to be replaced.
Get it checked by a tire professional. You should also ensure that all tires are in compliance with the specifications on the decal on your vehicle’s doors jamb.
* Prepare for thunderstorms and other inclement weather by storing emergency supplies in the trunk. It is important to keep a spare tire properly inflated, a blanket, extra clothing, matches, candles, extra water, snacks, medications, and a charger for your car’s cell phone.
* While you should carry emergency supplies, be careful not to overload your vehicle. Overloading your vehicle can lead to excessive heat in the tires, which can cause serious injury and damage. Keep in mind that your vehicle’s total weight includes you and your passengers.
* Finally, if you’ll be doing a lot of driving, try to keep the gas tank at least half full at all times. It is important to have a reserve of fuel in order to avoid being stuck between gas stations in rural areas or in heavy traffic.
After making sure your vehicle is ready to go, roll down your window and adjust the radio. Then, enjoy the open roads.
