Summer means driving season to many American families. It’s important that you prepare for your trip before you even leave the driveway.

Firestone Complete Auto Care recommends that drivers follow these steps to prepare for summer driving.

Be aware of what you’re taking with you. You will need to make sure that your vehicle is in good condition before mounting a storage container or towing a trailer. You must ensure that your trailer or storage container is properly attached to your vehicle. If you have extra weight, make sure to check the air pressure in your tires.

Low gears may be necessary. You can decrease the wear on your brakes if you’re driving in the mountains. Before you go on your trip, make sure your automotive service professional inspects your brakes and transmission systems.

– Make sure your vehicle can handle off-road driving. Check that your tires have been properly inflated, aligned and in good condition before you leave for any adventure. Check that your spare tire is in top shape. A flat tire will make it difficult to return to the pavement. Make sure to read the manual so you are familiar with how to operate the 4-wheel-drive system in your vehicle.

Fuel consumption is important. Your fuel efficiency will drop if you add storage shells, tow a truck, or use 4-wheel-drive. Because you will be using fuel at a much faster rate than normal, it is important to monitor your gas gauge, especially if traveling in remote areas.

Prepare an emergency plan. Keep a few emergency items handy. A flashlight, first aid kit and cell phone charger are all good options. Also, you can keep water and non-perishable foods, a properly inflated spare wheel, jumper cables, and your auto club membership handy. Consider bringing a tent, or another shelter if you are going to be camping in remote areas.

You and your family will be safer if you plan and prepare for your summer adventures.
