It’s normal to reduce spending during difficult economic times. However, experts from the non-profit National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence advise that putting off maintenance and service on your vehicle can lead to more costly repairs down the road. Failure to replace worn brake pads, or an oxygen sensor that is not working properly — both simple services that can be performed by qualified auto technicians — can lead to costly brake rotor service and expensive replacement of the vehicle’s catalytic convert.

According to ASE-certified master automotive technicians, a vehicle that is well maintained will last twice as long as one that has been neglected. According to certified professionals, oil changes, tire and brake services, wheel alignments, fuel filters, and transmission service are some of the most neglected items. ASE notes that a well-maintained vehicle will get better gas mileage, pollute less, be safer to drive and have a higher resale price.

ASE provides the following checklist of advice to assist consumers in choosing a repair shop that meets their needs.

Ensure that you find a clean, organized facility with cars in the lot that are equal in value to yours and modern equipment in its service bays.

– You want a professional staff that is friendly and willing to answer your questions.

You should look for policies that cover estimated repair costs, diagnostic fees and guarantees.

Ask the repair facility whether they specialize in repairs of your kind or if they are familiar with it.

– Pay attention to signs of professionalism, such as customer service awards or civic, community or customer service honors.

– Seek out evidence that qualified technicians are present: certificates of advanced course work, trade school diplomas and certification by ASE.

– Look for the ASE symbol or logo. This indicates that the shop employs nationally licensed technicians.
