When teenage drivers return to school in the fall, they are hit with icy and wet weather.

Improper drivers on slippery roads could make costly errors. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration statistics show that nearly 1 million accidents occur each year in wet conditions.

Young drivers don’t have to be sick each time it rains or freezes, no matter how much they may like to pretend otherwise. Bridgestone Firestone offers these tips to help teenage drivers stay safe on icy and wet roads:

Slow down your roll Safe driving in wet or icy conditions means that you drive under the speed limit. Avoiding driving too quickly can result in a longer stopping distance. This can make it dangerous for slippery roads. Hydroplaning can be reduced by driving slowly.

Know when to use your brakes. Driving in wet weather can lead to hydroplaning cars slipping under the brakes. Do not apply the brakes if your car begins to hyrdoplane. You can simply remove your foot from your accelerator and let your car slow down as you steer it. Push the clutch to regain control if you have a manual transmission.

Winter weather means you should use your brakes harder in emergency situations. If your car has an Anti-Lock Brake System, (ABS), you need to apply the brakes as hard as possible and then keep them down. The ABS system will allow you to steer your car as you brake.

Safety is possible if you take the following steps. Make sure you have your lights on in dim conditions so other drivers can see. To avoid your car skidding when you enter a turn, slow down, and brake slowly before entering the turn.

Drive defensively. The best route to your destination is the one you plan. Avoid bridges, hills, and busy areas. Be aware of cars approaching from the sides and allow for extra distance between you and the vehicle in front. Do not speed up if you see someone riding your bumper.

You can also store the number and name of an emergency contact on your phone, under the name. “ICE.”This acronym stands as “in case of emergency”This helps rescue personnel quickly locate a friend/family member.
