Southern California will soon have an additional source of organic, locally grown produce. It will also be home to one the most efficient energy-efficient utilities in the country. urban gardenThe U.S. has many systems

GreenGro Technologies is a startup based out of Anaheim, Calif. It designs indoor farming equipment and vertical gardens. They just launched BP?Gardens, a greenhouse project that will supply local restaurants, grocers and communities with fresh, pesticide free produce and culinary herbs.

“We are in the midst of a movement, and the demand for locally grown, organic produce has never been stronger,”Dien McCall, an engineering contractor from ACS Corp., Greengro’s partner at BP Gardens and Dien McCall of Greengro, is a strong advocate for the renewable energy sector, having been involved in it for almost 20 years. “This project is ideally suited to fill that demand.”

Orange County, Calif. is the location of the first phase. This area features 30,000 sq. feet of greenhouses. Each structure will undergo a number of energy-efficient upgrades including hydroponic, aeroponic, and aquaponic system upgrades.

GreenGro’s vision for sustainability and ACS’s experience in alternative energy projects help ensure that the project has the lowest carbon footprint.

GreenGro’s advanced hydroponics and greenhouse equipment aren’t just useful for growing vegetables. James Haas, CEO, found that most of his customers are interested in his vertical gardens and grow lights for medical marijuana.

According to the Orange County Register GreenGro belongs to a group of OC businesses which have nothing to do w/ medical marijuana, but provide services and technology that are beneficial to that industry. Haas estimates that 60 percent of his customers in Roseville, Calif. buy his gardening equipment for growing medical marijuana.

This market is becoming very lucrative, with 19 states already having legalized medical cannabis at different levels. “Every time you see another state jump on the (legalization) bandwagon, business sales increase,” Haas said. “There’s a good market in it.”

GreenGro isn’t the only company that is following this path. Terra Tech, a company that specializes in greenhouse hydroponic production on the east side, and Privateer Holdings (a private equity firm) are both investing in businesses that support medical marijuana ancillary industries.
