Potholes are a problem that is growing in communities. Roads that are rough can cause damage to tires and make it more difficult for cars to navigate. Potholes can pose a danger to cyclists who may be forced to drive closer to traffic in order to avoid potholes or to avoid falling. It can be difficult for seniors and mothers with strollers to walk on unkempt roads.
A study of U.S. Highways found that repairs to vehicles for potholes and other road hazards cost the nation $4.8 billion each year. This is almost four times the amount spent each year by the state highway departments on road repairs, according to the Environmental Working Group and Surface Transportation Policy Project.
Two types of pothole repair are possible: workers can either replace the entire road or fix the potholes. Pothole repair is not a simple task. Potholes can develop at any point. These methods can extend the life of roads, and make them safer.
However, filling potholes takes energy and time. Many municipalities lack the manpower required to maintain their aging roads. Transporting materials for repair can prove difficult, as they must be kept warm. Many areas are not able to fix potholes during winter, making roads unsafe until spring.
Companies have developed new technologies to improve the safety of roads.
