November was declared National Family Caregivers Month for the fifteenth consecutive year. Parkinson’s disease(PD) affects the motor skills function and cognitive abilities of people with PD. Joe, Carolyn’s husband, is her caregiver for 51 years and helps her manage her PD.
Joe is a caregiver and says that Joe: “From day one, I had to accept the hand we were dealt and do what I could to ensure that Carolyn remained active and continued taking her medication as directed.”
After experiencing a slight tremor in her right thumb and persistent handwriting abnormalities for five years, Carolyn and Joe visited a neurologist who diagnosed her PD and prescribed AZILECT® (rasagiline tablets) and regular exercise to help manage her disease.
Although symptoms and treatments may differ between patients, Carolyn says that Joe is a great caregiver. Joe responded to a question about his top piece of advice for caregivers. “Long-term planning for medical and financial security is essential.”He also cited patience and understanding among the virtues caregivers should exhibit.
Carolyn can continue to enjoy her favorite things, such as spending time with her grandchildren, traveling, and participating in water sports at nearby lakes, thanks to Joe’s and Carolyn’s daily treatments.
