You shouldn’t be fooled by the SUV’s large size and rugged exterior. Regular maintenance is necessary for safe and effective operation of SUVs. Safety is a key concern for new SUV drivers. Firestone Complete Auto Care offers these steps to help you and your passengers stay safe when it gets cold.

* Brake early and with caution. SUVs can weigh as much as two to three times that of a standard vehicle. This means they require longer stopping distances. Keep an eye on the distance between you, the vehicle in front of you, and the vehicle in behind you. You can start your brake sequence in a lighter vehicle earlier than in an SUV.

* Turn with care. Brake earlier if you are approaching a turn – this is more important for lighter vehicles. Move your foot away from the brakes at the start of the turn and then steer in the direction you want. This will give you the best traction and prevent you from sliding or skidding.

* Be aware of road conditions. Although SUVs are capable of handling snow well, they cannot or should speed through sleet, snow, or ice-covered roads. An SUV can find it difficult to stop in such conditions. Drive only when the road conditions permit.

* Watch your fuel level. Four-wheel drive uses more gas than normal driving. In cooler months, it is a good idea to fill up more frequently to ensure that your tank remains at least half-full. This will help to prevent condensation. If you find yourself stuck in traffic, the fuel reserve is also important.

* Check your tires. A four-wheel drive does not guarantee good traction. All four tires must have the same tread depth and be inflated at the recommended pressure by the manufacturer. For every 10 degree drop in temperature, the air in tires contracts, decreasing tire pressure by up to one pound per sq inch. You should check your pressure more often during cold months and periods with high temperatures. Because the tire tread is not designed to meet the road surface, under-inflation can reduce gripping power.
