The FDA took action once again to raise awareness about the dangers associated with over-the-counter pain relief.
FDA mandated that well-known brands such as Bayer, Aleve Motrin, Motrin and Excedrin have stronger label warnings in April 2009. These brands all contain non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and can cause stomach bleeding. Acetaminophen (the pain-relieving drug in Tylenol) has been shown in small overdoses to cause liver damage. FDA is looking at ways to decrease liver risk by reducing the dosage of Acetaminophen per tablet.
Both NSAIDs as well as acetaminophen medications are still effective in relieving pain. However, there is a growing need for safer, but more effective, treatment options. There are many options available depending on what type of pain you have.
Headaches & Sinus Pain:
* Capsaicin, which is extracted from pepper plants, has been highly researched by scientists. Clinical studies have shown that intramuscular capsaicin is effective in relieving severe headaches, such as cluster headaches and migraines. Studies have also shown that capsaicin is effective in relieving sinus congestion and pain, without any side effects. The market for all-natural nasal sprays of capsaicin is relatively new. Some examples are Sinus Buster Nasal Sprays and Headache Buster Nasal SPRAYS.

* Sinus Washes and Neti-Pots rinse the nasal passages with an all-natural salt-water solution, which helps flush out allergens, irritants and excess mucus that can lead to sinus problems and pain.
Arthritis/Body Pain:
* Heat Wraps are heat-activated, drug-free body wraps that provide targeted pain relief for arthritis and muscle aches.
* Glucosamine and Chondroitin Supplements can help restore cartilage and may help reduce pain in some people with moderate to severe knee pain. There have been studies that suggest that glucosamine may be as effective in relieving osteoarthritis symptoms in the knee as ibuprofen, and with fewer side-effects.
* Acupuncture is a method of encouraging the body to promote natural healing and to improve functioning. This involves inserting needles into the acupuncture points and applying heat/electrical stimulation. Go to for a list of acupuncturists near you. www.acufinder.com.
