While you may not think about your pool much at the end, your spring workload will be determined by what you do. It will be easier to open your pool if you winterize it properly.

Pools that are not properly winterized can sustain freeze-thaw damages, broken equipment, underground drainage damage, and poor water quality. Americans spend thousands every year fixing pools that weren’t properly sealed.

BioGuard, which supplies water treatment products to recreational and industrial users, has the following tips for pool owners that want to properly close their swimming pools.

* Conduct a final pool water test. For a quick water analysis, take a sample to your local BioGuard dealer. This will verify that your pool’s water is balanced. After testing your water, the dealer can recommend and provide all the materials needed to close your pool during winter. This includes information about how to protect your equipment and pool surfaces.

* Brush the walls and floor of your pool and vacuum it thoroughly. Clean the skimmer basket & lint trap.

* Use a special filter cleaner to thoroughly clean the filter. Filter that is dirty can become hardened and caked over winter. This can lead to a difficult and messy clean-up.

* With the pump and filter on, add the appropriate amount of winter shock around the edges of the pool. Give it an hour before adding winter algaecide. For another hour, keep the pump running and filter in place.

* If you completely cover and close your pool, drain it to just below the return water lines. Drain your equipment, then add pool-winterizing freeze to the pipes and equipment. It may be necessary to remove the filter and pump from colder areas and place them in an enclosed area. For specific instructions, contact your local BioGuard dealer.

* Finally, cover your pool to protect from winter winds, leaves, dirt and debris.
