Parents worry about the safety of their children at home, in school, and at play. A window covering can sometimes be the most dangerous household item.
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission over 200 infants and children have died due to accidentally strangling in window cables since 1990. Since long, the topic of whether children are at risk from these cords has been hot. Yet, many parents fail to see or recognize this hidden danger.
Here are some tips to help parents avoid a possible window-cord accident.
Keep children away from inner lift and window pull cords. Tasseled pull cords must be kept short. Continuous-loop cables should also be securely anchored to the wall or floor. Cord stops should be properly installed and adjusted in order to limit movement of inner lift cables.
When horizontal blinds or shades come to rest on a windowill, lock the cords in place.
All cribs, beds and furniture should be moved away from windows.
Use cordless window coverings only in bedrooms and sleeping areas for children. Today’s safer products can replace window blinds, draperies and corded shades made before 2001.
Comfortex Window Fashions makes cordless cell shades. The shades can be raised or lowered by parents using a gentle push or pull. This provides light control and comfort without the need for a cord. Motorized shades, which eliminate cord hazards and allow parents the freedom to adjust the shades remotely, are also offered by the company.
