To paraphrase Mark Twain: “Giving up smoking is the easiest thing in the world. I know because I’ve done it thousands of times.”It’s easy to set a goal whether you want to lose weight, get promoted, or spend more time with family. But it’s the carrying it out that can be difficult.
But the world’s most successful people have a strong goal orientation. They are clear about what they want and work hard to achieve it every day. What’s the difference in a top executive from everyone else?
“The fact is that successful people fail far more than unsuccessful people,” says Brian Tracy, a top management consultant, in a recent Q&A with SUCCESS Magazine. “Successful people try more things, fall down, pick themselves up and try again — over and over before they finally win.”What can you do to stop giving up on your dreams? SUCCESS Magazine has the following tips to help you achieve your goals more successfully:
– Make a list of your goals. Cynthia Kersey, author “Unstoppable: 45 Powerful Stories of Perseverance and Triumph from People Just Like You,”It is important to focus on what you want to be remembered. “List the qualities, deeds and characteristics for which you would like to be remembered by your friends, spouse, children, co-workers, the community and even the world.”
– Create a plan for achieving your goals. Tracy suggests listing the small steps you need to reach your goal and organizing them in order of priority or sequence. Find out how much time or money it will take to reach your goals and then revise your plan.
– Manage your mindset. Be focused by surround yourself with people who will support you in achieving your goals. You can arrange your home and workspace so that you are reminded of your promises. “When you form the habit of starting your productivity earlier in the day, associating with more positive people, managing the news and information you feed your mind, controlling the language you use — especially the ways in which you describe yourself — you will find it easier to succeed,”Jim Cathcart is a professional speaker and the founder of Cathcart Institute Inc. “Become the person who would achieve your goals and who would deserve them.”
