The 44-62 year old baby boomers in America aren’t getting enough sleep. According to the Better Sleep Council (BSC), 75% of boomers get less than the recommended 8 hours of sleep every night. Alarmingly, one-sixth (82 million) of today’s boomers are having trouble sleeping at night.
It is possible to get a better night of sleep by making small changes in your bedroom and daily sleep habits.
“A good night’s sleep is vital to proper health and well-being at any age; it’s critical to look, feel and perform your best,”Karin Dillner, director for communications at the BSC, said: “What many people may not realize is that you don’t need to go to extremes to get better sleep. It could be as simple as enhancing your sleep surroundings.”
The BSC suggests these tips to improve your sleep quality:
Establish a routine for a relaxing night’s sleep. Relax before bed by taking a warm bath or tub, then reading a book or listening calming music.
– Exercise regularly. Regular exercise can help you stay fit and sleep better at nights. Avoid doing strenuous exercises right before bed.
Avoid eating before you go to bed. Eat at least two to three hour before bedtime. Avoid heavy meals later in the day.
Also, it is important to assess your sleep environment. Your bedroom should be dark, quiet and comfortable. It should also be free from televisions or laptops. Next, examine your mattress. Your mattress should be supportive and provide you with comfort. You should replace your mattress when your mattress is at least five to seven years of age.
“As we age, our bodies’ needs for comfort and support change,”Dillner: “The best-quality mattress is simply the one that meets your own personal needs for comfort and support.”
