Families are enjoying the warmer temperatures by spending more time outdoors. As families get ready to host outdoor events, it is important to protect against mosquito bites and prevent mosquito infestations.

Many diseases are transmitted by mosquitoes, making them one of the most dangerous animals on the planet. The Zika virus, which has been making headlines this year, has caused concern for pregnant women. We should be cautious as it is still unknown how Zika virus spreads, especially in the U.S.

“Proactivity and public cooperation are huge components of mosquito prevention,”Cindy Mannes is vice president of public affairs for the National Pest Management Association. “Homeowners play an important role in helping to reduce mosquito populations and can work to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds throughout the season.”

There are many important steps the American public can take to protect themselves from the mosquito-borne diseases. The NPMA encourages homeowners to eradicate mosquito breeding sites on their properties. They also recommend that they wear appropriate attire to protect themselves from bites.

* Remove all sources of stagnant water. You can find standing water in places like gutters, buckets flowerpots and birdbaths. For mosquitoes to reproduce, they only require 1/2 inch of standing moisture. To reduce the risk of them reproducing, it is crucial to eliminate these areas.

* Minimize outside activity between dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most active. To protect yourself from daytime bites like the Asian Tiger Mosquito, the main carrier for Zika, you should also take proactive steps during the day.

* When outdoors, wear long-sleeve shirts, long pants, socks and closed-toe shoes.

* When hosting guests outside, keep the air moving. A fan can be used to keep mosquitoes away from you and your guests. The pests aren’t strong flyers so it is possible to make outside events more enjoyable by circulating the air.
