The signing of a landmark energy bill will raise fuel economy standards for all vehicles from 26.4 to 35 miles per gallon (mpg). Environmentalists rejoice, but you may be wondering how this will impact your wallet.
The recent bill signed by President Bush a 40% increase in fuel economy. The president referred to the legislation as “a landmark act.” “major step toward reducing our dependence on oil, confronting global climate change, expanding the production of renewable fuels and giving future generations of our country a nation that is stronger, cleaner and more secure.”
Each car manufacturer must meet the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE), which sets a standard for sales-weighted fuel efficiency for all vehicles sold in the U.S. each model year.
Future CAFE standards will be applicable to all vehicles made in the U.S., up to 10,000 lbs. These standards should be established starting in Model Year 2011 and continuing until they achieve a combined average fuel efficiency of 35 mpg. There are currently separate standards for light trucks and cars with four- and two-wheel-drives. Newly signed legislation allows for an automatic increase to be applied to the entire U.S. Fleet.
The law also mandates a greater use of ethanol. It is cleaner burning and less efficient than gasoline. These vehicles may not see significant improvements in gas mileage due to the increased use of ethanol.
