Even with the advancements in rescue technology, very few things are as sophisticated as a dog’s nose.

Dogs trained in search-and-rescue can locate a scent and distinguish it from others for hours. Paws are able to travel in places that wheels can’t, which helps victims trapped on uneven or unstable terrain. Dogs can help humans find survivors even if they’re not on a leash. They can climb ladders and tunnel through debris.

It is not possible for every dog to become a search and rescue dog. Canines should be able to work with their handlers and must be able to focus on one task at a time. FEMA-certification training takes approximately one year. It must be continued throughout the dog’s life – about 10 years.

The demand for search and rescue dogs is very high. There are currently not enough dogs to meet the needs of every emergency team. However, some rescue organizations are trying to find more search-andrescue dogs.

National Disaster Search Dog Foundation in Ojai, Calif. and Nutro Products Natural Choice dog food joined forces to increase awareness about the need to have more FEMA-certified canine search dogs.

FEMA-certified search dogs are created by the SDF. SDF dogs are found in shelters by successful search-and rescue dogs. The dogs also undergo rigorous training.

The SDF partners the dogs with firefighters to train them, and they use the dogs in their emergency response teams. The SDF is an independent nonprofit that provides care for all dogs, even those who have not completed the program.

There are currently only 150 Advanced Certified Canine Teams in the United States. More Search-and-rescue Dog Teams will increase national security and disaster preparedness.
