You may be able find a more harmonious coexistence with your pet friend by learning more about allergies.

The Humane Society estimates that 62 percent American households own at least one pet. An estimated 31 million Americans are allergic or sensitive to animals, which includes up to 30% of asthma sufferers. Here are some facts about pet allergies.

Myth 1: All allergies can be caused by pet hair.

It is not true. Because pet hair contains saliva and other proteins, allergies can be caused by it. Pet proteins in pet dander (such as saliva, urine, and microscopic skin flakes) can cause allergic reactions in pets. Allergy sufferers have an overactive immune system that attacks these harmless substances.

Myth 2 – Constant exposure will eventually cause you to become less sensitive to animals

In some cases, the reverse is true. You can’t increase your exposure if you have an allergy to animals. In fact, it may get worse.

Myth 3 – Allergies disappear when you have the right pet.

It is not true. It is true that all dog and cat breeds produce dander. Certain breeds, however, are better than others for allergy sufferers. The most desirable breeds are those with the lowest fur loss and/or who are bathed frequently. Smaller dogs produce more saliva than larger dogs.

Myth 4 – Small animals are not an allergy problem

False. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, hamsters, guinea pigs and birds can trigger asthma and allergies in people who are allergic to animal dander.

Myth 5: Pet allergies should not be an issue outside the home.

Not necessarily. Because of their small size and jagged shape pet allergens can easily stick to clothes and other fabrics and can be transported to other places. According to the American Lung Association, animal dander can be found in public places like schools, hospitals, and classrooms in sufficient amounts to cause allergic reactions.

Myth 6: A purifier can help with allergies in pets

It all depends upon the air purifier. Only high-performance air purifiers can do the trick. Some allergy sufferers claim that low-quality or small-sized air cleaners make very little to no difference. Many allergy sufferers say that the IQAir purifier combined with better cleaning methods has significantly reduced or eliminated their allergic reactions.
