If you are passionate about American history and especially the Revolutionary War, the new “Patriot Trails” could be right for you.

Patriot Trails, a tour that focuses on the struggle for independence in modern times, was created by the Valley Forge Tourism and Convention Board. Self-guided Revolutionary War Journey uses web-based mobile technology. It tells the richly-detailed story of the Revolutionary War’s unfolding in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. The best part is that the information can be accessed even while the visitor is not at the important locations.

“Most people recognize the role that Valley Forge National Historical Park played during those crucial years of 1777 and 1778,”Edward Harris is vice president of marketing communications and marketing at VFTCB. “What visitors — and even locals — may not know is that the encampment that was housed there is just one aspect of a much larger story.”

These itineraries highlight 16 historical sites throughout the county. Notable locations include Peter Wentz Farmstead, Lansdale, twice Washington’s temporary headquarters and Hope Lodge, Fort Washington, where Washington encamped for six weeks before the winter in Valley Forge.

“What we are doing is telling that tale by showcasing other significant historic sites throughout Montgomery County,”Harris. “The information for our trails is formatted for mobile devices. Our website’s responsive technology enables history buffs, families, students and groups to access information on the go.”

The Patriot Trails website breaks down exploration into manageable options depending on the time available. Itineraries are available in a variety of lengths, from one-hour to several-day. They can also be modified. It also features mini-biographies that highlight the men or women who were willing to fight the British crown.

“We are very excited about this tour,”Harris. “Its success can be replicated to enable visitors to experience our great county in a whole host of ways, from military history beyond the Revolution to arts and culture destinations to retro theaters and brewpubs.”
