Everyone loves to enjoy sunny days with their friends and family.
Cookouts are often associated with greasy cheeseburgers or mayonnaise-laden potatoes salads, sugary soda, and other foods that can increase your waistline. The obesity rate in America has more than doubled since 1980. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 33 percent of Americans are obese.
Don’t despair! It’s possible to have a lighter meal without sacrificing flavor or fun. Leanne Ely, nutritionist and author of The Nutritionist’s Guide to Cooking Lighter. “Saving Dinner”The following tips are from the cookbook:
Boost the Protein. Choose leaner meats for hamburgers to reduce fat. If you don’t want to serve red meat, consider using turkey or vegetarian hamburgers. Serve whole-wheat buns for extra fiber.
– Choose Better Burger Toppings. For crisp lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and soy-based Veggie Slices, you can visit the produce section. This cheese alternative tastes just like real cheese without any added cholesterol or saturated fat. You can substitute mayonnaise for salsa and spicy mustard. They add fat-free flavor.
Marinate. Mix sunflower oil, vinegar, or citrus juice with some fresh herbs or spices to create your own marinade.
Skip sugary drinks Drinking sodas is important for staying hydrated during warmer weather. Even diet sodas are high in sodium. Drink unsweetened iced coffee with lemon, orange and lime slices. Or make a summer spritzer by combining cranberry juice, soda water, and cranberry juice for a refreshing summer treat.
