Americans will spend on average seven years in the toilet. It’s far too long to deal with a plunger.

“Today’s toilets virtually eliminate clogging,”James Walsh, American Standard’s chinaware director, said: “There are toilets that have been independently rated to flush 1,000 grams of solids with a single flush. That’s almost two and half pounds!”

Here’s how you can find the best in flushers

1. You can check the scores. The Maximum Performance (MaP Test) is an independent report that measures how cleanly solids can be eliminated in a single flush. John Koehler, Veritec Consulting developed the most recent report. It is available free of charge at www.veritec.ca. Consumer rating magazines can also provide independent results for flush tests.

2. The trapway should be the longest. Two-inch waterways run out the back of most toilets. This narrow trapway increases the strength of siphon, the pull-action that draws water and waste out of the bowl. While the difference between a two-inch and a two-and-three-eighths-inch trapway doesn’t sound like much, the additional width can handle 70 percent more mass.

3. You can find power from the top. Today’s best flushers clean the bowl when water enters it, and not through the trapway. American Standard’s Champion 4 toilet, which is rated the best, has a maximum opening of four inches between the tank (four inches) and the bowl. The tank’s water is quickly accelerated by a patented flush valve that has a funnel shape.

4. Give peace and quiet a chance. However, pressure-assisted toilets don’t clog and flush loudly. Gravity-fed toilets are quieter and have the best performance. Re-engineered waterways decrease water turbulence.

5. Fully-glazed waterways are recommended, as the porcelain glaze can hinder sticking. Double-glazing with antimicrobial elements offers nano-level smoothness. It also has the added benefit of preventing stains from forming.

You can find high-performance toilets at lower prices than those in high-fashion styles. It lasts seven years.
