Despite slow consumer spending over the last year, at least two consumer market sectors have performed well in republican-voting countries — home improvementEntertainment has increased while the economy has remained stable.

This announcement comes after another election season, when Porch.com (http://porch.com/), announced the results from a data survey on home maintenance and improvement activity across the country in the aftermath of the 2012 presidential elections. The first ever global home improvement network analysis showed that consumers have not significantly changed their home maintenance and home improvement spending after President Barack Obama’s re-election. Ceiling repair, plumbing, and painting are just a few examples of home maintenance and improvement projects.

“I think what our data team has proven is that there is no relationship between how a state votes and the subsequent change in consumer spending,” says Porch.com CEO Matt Ehrlichman. “However, in particular regions of the country, we did see an increase in entertainment spending — possibly in reaction to the emotion they were feeling after President Obama was elected to a second term.”

According to data, states that voted for Romney saw a greater increase in entertainment spending than states that voted Obama. Porch.com suggests that states that were disappointed by the results were more likely than others to seek entertainment.

“We speculate that many individuals may have increased entertainment spending in order to escape the reality that the President would be serving a second term,”Tim Ellis, data journalist at Porch.com, says

Entertainment spending includes electronics, movies and pets.
