Americans are looking to save money in today’s economy by making their homes more efficient. Green homes are a cost-saving and environmentally friendly option. But, if you already have energy-efficient appliances in your home, what can you do?

Many homeowners don’t realize the importance of flooring in determining energy-efficiency. Carpet provides insulation, which is something that’s not possible with other types of flooring. Wall-to wall carpet can make your home more comfortable in winter than in summer and lower your energy costs.

Recent testing at Johns Manville Technical Center Thermal Labs has shown that carpet and pad have a higher R-value. This is the measure of thermal resistance. A material’s resistance to heat transfer is measured by its R-value. Carpets that have a higher R value are better at keeping heat inside the home.

The carpets were tested against three types of flooring: laminate, ceramic tile, and engineered hardwood. What was the result? Carpets can insulate up 17 times better than hard surfaces.

“Carpeted floors provide insulative properties in the home,”Rick Ramirez is Shaw Floors’ vice president for sustainability. “In addition to its energy-saving aspect, the warmth and softness of carpet create a more comfortable living environment. Plus, carpet offers sound dampening benefits, which contribute to a quieter home.”

The California Energy Commission offers these easy, but highly effective tips to help homeowners improve the efficiency of their homes.

* Adjust the temperature accordingly. Heating costs can be reduced by up to 5 per cent for every degree that you reduce your heat between 60 and 70 degrees.

* Reduce hot water temperature. Your water heater should be set to the “normal”Unless the dishwasher owner specifies otherwise, set to 120°F.

* Get with the program. A programmable thermostat can help you save up to 15% on your energy bills.
