Summer is here, but you still have time to plan a relaxing getaway or a backyard party while it is warm and clear. Take a look at your outdoor space to make sure the lighting is adequate and adds to the atmosphere.
The following is an extract from the American Lighting AssociationAn update to your lighting system can make outdoor activities more enjoyable. The best part? It doesn’t have to be difficult or expensive to transform an existing patio, deck, or pool into a beautiful retreat.
“Creating a beautiful landscape doesn’t have to be expensive,”Rick Wiedemer, Hinkley Lighting “A few well-placed, low-voltage path or accent lights can make a huge impact on a well-manicured landscape.”There is no lawn too small. “Even modest homes or those with limited yards or gardens can benefit,”He says.
A few outdoor lighting tips:
Layer outdoor lighting. Outdoor lighting should be used in the same way as indoor lighting. It should use overhead, task, and ambient lighting sources. Even outside, where there is no need for boundaries and borders, these three layers will enhance enjoyment by helping to create smaller sitting and entertaining areas.
You can create a safe and secure environment. You can improve security by installing lighting in dark corners and near entrances. Make sure to aim the lights away from your door to not blind people entering your outdoor space.
Reduce glare. Use a downward-facing light source and a hooded fixture to illuminate walkways and paths. Exterior-safe dimmers or movable fixtures can often be used to control the light level.
Add decorative elements. Although functionality is important, aesthetic elements can be used to create a peaceful and inspiring environment. Lighting that highlights architectural details and other decorative elements, such as pergolas, arbors, patios, and so forth, should be a priority.
Conserve energy. For their efficiency, consider LEDs. Consider Dark Sky and Energy Star fixtures which can reduce glare, minimize light to the sky, as well as nearby yards and windows. Be sure to verify the color (chromaticity), of outdoor LED lights. Low chromaticity outdoor lights (2700K and 3000K) will be similar to halogen or incandescent bulbs. Higher chromaticity (higher than 4000K) LEDs will look whiter and bluer.
