Although many people are well aware of the fundamental principles of good oral health, thousands of people fail to floss their teeth and lie about it. A national survey has revealed that 27 percent of U.S. adults lie to their dentists regarding how often they floss. Daily flossing is crucial in the prevention and treatment of periodontal disease.
Harris Poll behalf of the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP)The online survey included more than 2,000 U.S. adults, as well as the top 10 U.S. market markets. The AAP uses the survey results to encourage all Americans to “Love the Gums You’re With”Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory condition that occurs when bacteria in plaque grows below the gum line. This causes swelling, irritation, receding teeth, and tooth loss. Periodontal disease has been linked with many other chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and even cancer. Periodontal disease is a common condition, but it is seldom discussed. There is a lack in education and awareness.
“There’s clearly more work to be done when it comes to educating Americans about the importance of oral hygiene in maintaining healthy gums. There are more than 500 bacterial species that can be found in plaque, and brushing alone does not remove the bacteria that live below the gum line,”Joan Otomo Corgel, DDS and MPH, President of AAP, says “The good news about periodontal disease is that with proper and timely care, it’s treatable and often reversible. If a person has been diagnosed with or is at risk for periodontal disease, a periodontist has the training and expertise to determine the best course of treatment.”
A dentist can refer patients to a periodontist, if necessary. Patients should discuss their periodontal health.
