Plastics are the new villain in the environment scene. Plastic bag bans have been imposed by cities like San Francisco, Baltimore, and Boston. Ireland taxed plastic bags. National grocery stores in the U.S. offer inexpensive, reusable or paper bags to customers.
Plastic is everywhere. Plastic, a cheap petroleum product, is found in everything from clothing to computers to artificial legs. Plastic can be durable, lightweight and strong – but that’s where the problems lie.
Lightweight bags can blow into trees or oceans and suffocate wildlife. Plastic doesn’t easily break down in landfills. Americans throw out 100 billion plastic bags every year.
Plastic is too versatile for us to throw away. Scientists are currently developing biodegradable materials that do not require fossil fuels. However, until eco-friendly plastics are widely available, Americans will need to find more ways to reuse their plastic.
Recycled plastic is mainly found in secondary products that are not recyclable, such as textiles and plastic lumber. Americans can reduce plastic use by recycling their plastic containers. However, to reduce plastic waste entering landfills, scientists must create durable products using recycled plastics.
Power of the Dream Ventures, Inc., a Hungarian technology company, has developed two products that make innovative use of recycled plastics.
Turbocrete can be used to mix any waste material except metal, including plastic, glass, organic, and inorganic substances. Turbocrete behaves and hardens just like regular concrete. This technology could be used by builders to recycle trash and build roads and schools.
The company also has a method of filling potholes with plasticgranules. Pothole filling requires special equipment. However, the plastic granules can be heated directly on site. This will save you both fuel and energy. The plastic will completely fill and waterproof potholes.
