As contaminated drinking water spreads disease and contagions, families face a growing crisis. Contaminated water not only makes people sick but also leads to early death.

“Mothers lose 1.8 million children every year from diarrheal diseases caused by contaminated water — more than HIV/AIDS and malaria combined,” says Dr. Greg Allgood, director of P&G Children’s Safe Drinking Water Program (CSDW), a non-profit organization focused on the critical, global need for clean, safe drinking water.

However, there are some organizations and companies that can help. Pantene is the world’s most popular hair care brand and has announced a charitable partnership to CSDW. Pantene launched Healthy Hair for Healthy Water (“HHHW”), a program that aids CSDW in providing safe drinking water for women, children, families and communities around the world. This program will provide half a million liters of safe drinking water each year until 2020, helping to prevent the spread of 20 million cases of illness. It is expected to save an estimated 2,500 lives.

Pantene HHHW is part of its ongoing commitment to make meaningful improvements in sustainability through products, operations, and social responsibility programs. Pantene is committed to creating beautiful, innovative products that are better than the environment. This means there will be no price or performance compromises. They plan to launch HHHW in multiple regions in the world within the next five year and are currently working towards the next introductions of HHHW in Brazil and Indonesia.

Consumers can participate by purchasing Pantene products from the P&G eStore at www.pgestore.com/Pantene/pantene.default.sc.html. Pantene will donate ten dollars for each bottle bought from the eStore between February 28th and February 28th 2011. One PUR packet costs only ten cents. It transforms contaminated water to clean water. A single PUR packet is enough to transform 10 liters of contaminated drinking water into safe drinking water.
